Foxconn Industrial Internet enters CPO with yield and liquid-cooling moat
Foxconn Industrial Internet (FII), the mainland unit of Foxconn (2317 TT), is moving CPO (co-packaged optics) from concept toward deployment in full-rack integration, leveraging its AI-server leadership alongside liquid cooling and packaging-yield expertise as the competitive moat. Vertical integration across AI-server frame, liquid-cooling, and packaging assembly is the model needed for 1.6T-and-above interconnect generations, and most pure-play optical names lack the rack-level integration to compete. UMC (2303 TT) opened at NT$112.5 and hit NT$120.5 intraday on 19 May, a 26-year high. The move follows a US broker upgrade to Buy with a NT$138 target and active-management ETF buying in 00403A and 00981A. UMC is up 144.67% YTD and 55.88% MTD on the mature-node re-rating thesis.
Largan (3008 TT) opened at NT$3,445 and hit limit-up at NT$3,615 before pulling back, the highest since November 2020. The trigger was a rare insider buy: founder Lin Yao-ying's Moa Yu family holding company bought 100 lots in March (estimated value NT$230m), bringing the family stake to 14.24% from 14.17%. Analysts attribute the move to the company's CPO transition push.
TPK-KY (3673 TT) hit limit-up at NT$75.4 on 19 May after disclosing it is using TGV (through-glass-via) technology to develop advanced-packaging glass substrates for high-performance compute chips. Strong volume on the limit-up bid through the morning session.
Phison (8299 TT) fell to limit-down on 19 May after pricing its US$800m overseas convertible bond. The conversion premiums (25% and 30%) and dilution mechanics drove a short-term sell-off in NAND-storage peers, with Apacer (5289 TT) also limit-down. Phison closed below NT$2,735.
Nanya Technology (2408 TT) fell more than 9% intraday alongside Winbond (2344 TT), Macronix (2337 TT), and Powertech (6239 TT) on the Suwon court ruling narrowing Samsung's strike production-impact and the ex-Samsung chief's 2H27 reversal warning. Memory names together dragged about 55 points off the TAIEX.
Lumentum (LITE US) fell 8.83% on 18 May after Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness LP disclosed in its 1Q26 13F that it had fully sold its stake. The fund also disclosed a US$2bn notional VanEck Semiconductor ETF put and puts on NVDA, ORCL, AVGO, AMD, and MU.
Coherent (COHR US) fell 5.13% on the same Aschenbrenner 13F disclosure. Both Lumentum and Coherent had received NVIDIA strategic investment in the prior cycle, and both had run hard over the past 12 months.

Samsung court ruling cancels Taiwan memory transfer-trade as ex-Samsung chief flags 2H27 top

Top Market Signals

Memory cycle hits its first credible bear

Kye-hyun Kyung, former president of Samsung's Device Solutions division, told the Korean Academy of Engineering's 285th forum that DDR5's +414% YoY price rally since July 2025 could begin reversing in 2H27 as China's DRAM expansion converts into actual output.

He pointed specifically to CXMT and Jiahe Jinwei accelerating DDR5 mass production. CXMT has launched 16Gb and 24Gb DRAM modules running at 8000 MT/s. Jiahe Jinwei is pushing a 64GB DDR5 RDIMM at 5600 MT/s under the Powev Sniker brand. Citing market data, Kyung said global memory capacity could reach 6 million wafers per month by 2H27, the point at which Chinese capacity meaningfully shifts the supply curve.

The near-term picture is still tight. TrendForce's 2Q26 survey released this week guides conventional DRAM contract prices +58-63% QoQ and NAND Flash +70-75% QoQ, with HBM and AI-server applications absorbing the bulk of supply. The bear-case framing matters because it puts a date on the cycle rather than just naming a risk, and because it comes from someone who ran Samsung's entire memory business as recently as 2024.

Our 29 Apr 2026 Blade flagged Vera Rubin's LPDDR appetite as the structural pull on memory. Kyung's call is the first credible structural pushback from inside the industry, and it sits squarely at the point where today's super-cycle pricing would need to roll over for FY27E memory earnings to compress.

Samsung strike ringfenced before it begins

The Suwon District Court's 31st Civil Division on 18 May 2026 granted Samsung Electronics a partial injunction requiring its 50,000-member union to maintain safety, equipment maintenance, and wafer-protection operations at normal weekday levels during the 18-day strike starting 21 May.

The court ruled that "operations preventing equipment damage and wafer degradation" are safety-related and cannot be interrupted by the action. The union faces fines of KRW100m per day for violations, with chairman Choi Seung-ho and acting chairman Woo Ha-kyung each personally liable for KRW10m per day. Filings began 16 April, hearings ran on 29 April and 13 May, and the court issued its decision two days ahead of the originally expected 20 May date, just three days before the strike begins.

The ruling does not block the strike itself, but it caps the production impact. The market read that within hours: Taiwan memory names that had rallied on a Samsung transfer-order narrative reversed sharply on the 19th, with Phison limit-down and Nanya Technology, Winbond, Powertech, and Macronix all falling more than 9% intraday.

The labor negotiation continues in parallel at the NLRB in Sejong. The union wants the KRW bonus cap removed and 15% of operating profit codified as the performance pool. Samsung has offered special incentives but rejects institutionalising the cap removal.

Aschenbrenner exits AI optical and stacks semi puts

Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness LP disclosed in its 1Q26 13F that it fully sold its Lumentum (LITE US) and Coherent (COHR US) positions and built a US$2bn notional put position on the VanEck Semiconductor ETF, plus separate put exposure on NVIDIA, Oracle, Broadcom, AMD, and Micron.

Lumentum fell 8.83% and Coherent fell 5.13% on the news on 18 May. Both names had been direct beneficiaries of AI data-center capex, both received NVIDIA strategic investment last cycle, and both had run hard over the past 12 months. The exit is the first major rotation away from the AI optical trade from an investor who has been one of its loudest advocates.

Aschenbrenner is 25 years old, was dismissed from OpenAI in 2024 over alleged information disclosure (he denies the allegation), and authored the 165-page Situational Awareness essay forecasting AGI by 2027. His fund grew from about US$250m at end-2024 to US$13.68bn at end-1Q26 by levering exposure to AI infrastructure. The 1Q26 disclosure marks the first time he has positioned net-short on parts of that supply chain, and Bloom Energy remains the fund's largest long.

The reading is positioning, not fundamentals: AI infra demand commentary from NVIDIA at the 20 May print is now the gating data point for whether his rotation marks a top.

UMC hits 26-year high on US broker upgrade as mature node re-rates

UMC (2303 TT) intraday hit NT$120.5 on 19 May, the highest price since April 2000, after a US broker upgraded the stock from Neutral to Buy with a NT$138 target and SMIC kept at Buy with HK$85 target.

The broker thesis is that AI infrastructure spend is now spilling over from leading-edge into mature-node demand, particularly PMIC and connectivity ICs needed in AI servers, AI PCs, and edge devices. UMC's 2H26 wafer pricing is expected to lift 5-10%, with further increases possible into 2027, and mature-node capacity is now seen tightening from 2H26 through 2028. The broker also expects TSMC to manage legacy-node capacity more disciplined to keep supply tight.

UMC is now up 144.67% YTD and 55.88% MTD. The pace is partly a re-rating from prior cycle lows and partly a positioning shift as two active ETFs in Taiwan (00403A and 00981A) have been buying. The supporting catalysts beyond the broker call are an Intel collaboration angle on mature-node fill, advanced packaging participation, and silicon photonics work.

Our 06 May 2026 Blade noted that Vanguard, UMC, and Powerchip raised mature-node prices simultaneously for the first time on record. Today's broker upgrade puts a forward valuation under that operational signal: 2H26 prices up another 5-10%, 2027 capacity still tight.

Phison raises US$800m in first international capital event

Phison (8299 TT) priced its first overseas unsecured convertible bond on 19 May, raising US$800m to fund foreign-currency procurement for its AI-ecosystem storage build-out. The two tranches were both priced at zero coupon, both at yields of -0.25%, both five-year tenor, and oversubscribed.

Tranche A is NT$-linked and US$-settled at NT$3,418.75 initial conversion (25% premium over the 18 May NT$2,735 close). Tranche B is pure US$ at NT$3,555.50 initial conversion (30% premium). Both tranches list on the Singapore Exchange, settle 26 May, and were arranged by J.P. Morgan as sole global coordinator and bookrunner. Phison framed the raise as funding its transition from a NAND controller and storage solutions vendor into an AI storage infrastructure and edge AI platform supplier.

The structural shift behind the raise: enterprise AI storage and edge AI inference are pulling demand for higher-margin, higher-spec NAND control rather than commodity controllers, which is where Phison's earnings power has lifted over the past four quarters.

The market reaction was a short-term selloff: Phison fell to limit-down on the 19th on dilution mechanics, with NAND-storage peer Innodisk (5289 TT) also limit-down. The cash itself is strategically positioned for global procurement of NAND wafers as 2Q26 NAND contract prices step up 70-75% QoQ per TrendForce, an environment where pre-funding inventory in dollars is a defensible call.

Tenstorrent draws Intel and Qualcomm acquisition interest

AI inference-chip startup Tenstorrent has held early acquisition discussions with Intel, Qualcomm, and other strategic buyers, with sources putting a potential sale valuation above US$5bn. The company is running parallel tracks: a new funding round with existing lead investor Fidelity Management at an earlier US$3.2bn valuation, and the sale exploration with an investment bank.

The triggering context is AI inference becoming the next chip battleground after training. Tenstorrent's architecture is positioned around inference-specific efficiency at lower power than NVIDIA or AMD systems. NVIDIA itself just paid roughly US$20bn in a licensing deal for parts of Tenstorrent competitor Groq. Cerebras took the IPO route instead of accepting Arm and SoftBank acquisition offers, listing at US$185 last week with US$5.55bn raised and a US$65bn market cap after a +68% first-day pop.

The strategic read for Intel is foundry plus internal AI chip. For Qualcomm it is closing the data-center AI gap that its acquisitions of Nuvia have not yet bridged. The risk for both is paying through US$5bn when SambaNova Systems, also in the inference category, is running its own funding round.

Samsung's Device eXperience (DX) division, which makes finished smartphones and consumer products, has for the first time added mobile DRAM and NAND to its formal raw-material procurement list, with mobile memory now ranked above camera modules.
