TSMC trims Vanguard stake to sharpen AI focus as Samsung strike reignites memory squeeze
Top Market Signals
TSMC sells 8.1% Vanguard stake to redirect capital to AI core
TSMC (2330 TT) announced on 15 May that it intends to divest an 8.1% stake in Vanguard International Semiconductor (5347 TT), placing 152 million shares with institutional investors. The sale lands while the Taiwan benchmark sits above 40,000 and several Taiwan conglomerates are using transfers of long-held minority stakes to free up operating capital for higher-priority lines.
According to Economic Daily News, TSMC framed the sale as a capital-structure pivot rather than an exit from the relationship. Vanguard remains an operating partner inside the Singapore VSMC joint venture, and TSMC stated the divestment does not affect ongoing collaboration. The decision is consistent with a balance sheet that no longer allocates space to mature-node minority positions when leading-edge AI capacity is the priority claim.
The cross-read is consistent with our 6 May 2026 Blade, which flagged Vanguard's pivot of the Singapore JV fab into CoWoS interposer service. With CoWoS demand still pulling forward, the strategic relationship between TSMC and Vanguard has shifted from mature-node investment to advanced-packaging supply support. The 8.1% stake is no longer the binding feature of that relationship.
For TSMC shareholders, the immediate use of proceeds will sit inside the next capex cycle: Arizona fab build-out, Kumamoto second-phase 3nm, and Dresden continued spend. None of those lines are inexpensive, and the partial Vanguard sale is the kind of capital reallocation Taipei investors have been waiting for as the AI capex curve steepens.

Hon Hai law conf flags Q2 AI rack growth and Q3 CPO switch ramp
Hon Hai (2317 TT) held its 1Q26 law conference on 14 May and guided second-quarter AI rack shipments to high double-digit percent sequential growth, with full-year shipments scaled to multiple-fold growth. Management also said operating margin has a chance to exceed 2025's 3.2% as AI scale lifts and in-house content rises.
According to cnYES reporting, the most concrete forward call was on optical networking inside AI clusters. Hon Hai said 800G-and-above switches are tracking to a full-year doubling, and that co-packaged optics (CPO, where the optical engine sits on the same package as the ASIC) switches enter mass production in 3Q26. CPO replaces pluggable optical modules and is what allows AI cluster bandwidth to scale past the 1.6T threshold while keeping rack power and thermal envelopes manageable.
This extends our 6 May 2026 Blade, which flagged Hon Hai's record April revenue and management's "Q2 is not the slow season" framing. The May law conf converts that revenue-side framing into specific shipment guidance. The CPO Q3 timing also lines up with our 4 May 2026 Blade, which flagged Win Semi's price raise on optical-chip demand acceleration.
For the broader Taiwan ODM cohort, Quanta (2382 TT) at its own 14 May law conf echoed the AI-server tailwind, citing triple-digit YoY shipment growth maintained and a lifted general-server outlook to double-digit growth. The signal is that AI rack capacity is not slowing; it is widening to include general-server side orders as agentic AI deployment pulls CPU cycles back into the loop.

TSMC Arizona 1Q26 profit eclipses its full 2024 print; Kumamoto turns profitable
TSMC's overseas fabs reached an inflection in 1Q26. Arizona delivered net profit of NT$18.8bn (NT$188.07億), a 36.9-fold YoY jump that already exceeds its full year 2024 result of NT$16.1bn. Kumamoto's JASM unit (TSMC majority, with Sony Semiconductor, DENSO, and Toyota Motor as JV partners) reported NT$951m of net profit, the first quarterly profit since mass production began in late 2024.
According to Central News Agency and cnYES, the inflection runs alongside a sharp decline in government subsidies booked. Total grants taken in 1Q26 across the US, Japan and Germany were NT$5.05億, down 98.56% from NT$351.49億 a year earlier. The improvement in Arizona and Kumamoto profit is therefore mostly operational, not a subsidy artefact. Dresden's ESMC unit, still in build-out, posted a NT$278m loss in the quarter, consistent with construction-phase economics.
TSMC plans to invest USD 165bn in Arizona to build six fabs, two advanced-packaging facilities, and one R&D center. Arizona Fab 1 began 4nm production in 4Q24; Fab 2 targets 3nm in 2H27; Fab 3 has broken ground; and Fab 4 plus the first advanced-packaging site are now in permitting. Kumamoto Fab 1 is producing 40nm down to 6/7nm for automotive, industrial, consumer and HPC end markets, with Fab 2 already in construction and now planned at 3nm (upgraded from the prior 6nm target).
The strategic read is that the CHIPS-era cost structure, which made overseas TSMC fabs look like financial drags through most of 2023 and 2024, no longer applies. Utilisation, mix, and price increases on advanced-node wafers have pushed the offshore fabs across the operating leverage tipping point.

Samsung Pyeongtaek strike threat returns as bonus-gap dispute breaks union talks
Samsung Electronics' union has confirmed plans to begin an 18-day strike at Pyeongtaek on 21 May, running through 7 June, with up to 50,000 members participating. Korean industry estimates put the direct-and-indirect production loss at around KRW 100 trillion (roughly NT$2.1 trillion) if the action proceeds. Chairman Lee Jae-yong issued his first public statement on the dispute on 16 May, apologising to global customers and the public.
According to LTN and Central News Agency, the union and management will resume wage talks under a government mediator on 18 May. Samsung has replaced its lead negotiator at the union's request. The Ministry of Employment and Labor met with Samsung management on 16 May and urged active dialogue. Senior Korean government officials, including the prime minister and the finance minister, have publicly framed avoiding the strike as a priority for economic growth, exports, and financial-market stability.
The trigger is a bonus split, not base wages. Samsung's Device Solutions (DS) division covers memory, system LSI (logic chip design), and foundry. The 27,000 memory employees received bonuses worth about six times what the roughly 23,000 employees in system LSI and foundry received. In March, memory staff were awarded bonuses equal to 607% of annual salary; other DS lines received 50% to 100%. The pattern echoes SK Hynix's removal of its bonus cap, which has lifted SK Hynix bonuses to about three times Samsung's and triggered talent flight from Samsung's memory division to SK Hynix.
For the AI memory market, an 18-day stoppage at Pyeongtaek hits the most concentrated AI memory production site at exactly the moment HBM4 ramps and the first Vera Rubin platforms enter qualification. Samsung's main customers cited in the Korean press include NVIDIA, AMD and Google. Even a partial production disruption would push allocation toward SK Hynix and Micron, both already running tight.

MLCC and power-management IC pricing cycle kicks off as Japan and Korea hit capacity ceiling
Yageo (2327 TT) posted April revenue of NT$14.03bn (140.3億), up 3.0% MoM and 22.0% YoY for another single-month record. The volume read-through is happening as Japan's Murata and Korea's Samsung Electro-Mechanics run their high-end AI MLCC (multi-layer ceramic capacitor) lines at full utilisation, and Japan's Taiyo Yuden lifted prices by double-digit percent on MLCCs, inductors and RF components starting 1 May.
According to LTN and Economic Daily News, the order overflow from Japan and Korea is now hitting Taiwan in volume. Walsin Tech (2492 TT) raised thermistor prices 15-20% and varistor prices 20-25% effective January, Sincere Industrial (6173 TT) reports ceramic-powder and MLCC utilisation at 90% with order visibility extended from three months to six, and Yageo chairman Pierre Chen said the firm's tantalum-capacitor capacity has been expanded by close to 30% and is still supply-constrained. MLCC lead times have stretched from a typical 8-12 weeks to 12-16 weeks.
The same pricing-power dynamic is now showing up one layer down in power management ICs. According to UDN reporting, Anpec (6138 TT), Silergy (6415 TT), and MediaTek's Richtek subsidiary will raise power-management IC prices in June or July, with hikes of 0-15% depending on wafer foundry, packaging house, and end application. Overseas, Texas Instruments and Monolithic Power Systems are pushing similar increases. Anpec chairman Wang Chih-hsin said the cost impact begins in July. The repricing is not demand-driven; it reflects foundry and packaging cost passthrough, but the unit-content increase in AI servers, AI power infrastructure, and high-speed networking is what allows it to stick.
Read across the two layers: AI server bills of materials are pulling unit content of MLCCs, inductors, magnetic components, and power ICs up at the same time that supply from Japanese and Korean leaders cannot meet incremental demand. The 2H26 margin tailwind for the Taiwan passive-component cohort is now a pricing tailwind on top of a volume tailwind.

Trump confirms Beijing blocks H200 sales as NVIDIA's US$78bn forecast already books zero China revenue
After the 14-15 May Trump-Xi summit in Beijing, US President Donald Trump confirmed that China is blocking Chinese enterprises from purchasing NVIDIA's H200 AI chip even though Washington has cleared the export framework. According to TechNews citing Bloomberg, Trump said Beijing "chose not to" approve the purchases, with the goal of redirecting Chinese AI demand toward domestic suppliers led by Huawei.
According to the same reporting, the US Commerce Department recently approved ten Chinese companies, including Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance, and JD, to buy H200 systems. The framework as approved is heavy: each shipment must be inspected by a third party on US territory, and NVIDIA must remit 25% of each transaction to the US Treasury. Lenovo and Hon Hai have been cleared as distributors. Even with that framework, Beijing's parallel block neutralises the channel.
The financial read is already in NVIDIA's number. Jensen Huang's prior public position, captured in our 4 May 2026 Blade, was that NVIDIA's China share has gone "from 95% to nearly zero." Today's confirmation that Beijing is forcing cancellation of orders already placed with NVIDIA closes the door for the cycle. Analyst estimates referenced in the TechNews article put the at-risk annual revenue at USD 3.5 to 4 billion if the framework had functioned. NVIDIA's USD 78bn full-year revenue forecast already excludes any China H200 contribution, so consensus expectations do not need to be rebased.
Trump also said the summit included discussion of "AI guardrails" and a bilateral AI dialogue channel, and the White House has separately moved to restrict Chinese model-distillation attacks on OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google frontier models. Hardware access is closed; the software perimeter is the next front.
