Anthropic's $40 Billion Google Lifeline and Intel's AI Surge Reset Compute Math

Top Market Signals

Google commits $40B to Anthropic, deepening TPU stack

Google (GOOGL US) plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, starting with $10 billion at a $350 billion valuation and another $30 billion contingent on performance milestones, according to Bloomberg reporting cited by TechCrunch.

The deal layers on top of Anthropic's existing infrastructure scramble. Google Cloud will provide TPU access. Anthropic's recent commitments include this week's incremental $5 billion from Amazon (AMZN US) and a CoreWeave (CRWV US) data center deal earlier in April. Anthropic's broader AWS arrangement now contemplates roughly $100 billion of spend for around 5GW of compute over time.

The trigger is Anthropic's release of Mythos, described as the company's most powerful model to date with significant cybersecurity applications. Anthropic has restricted broader access while it evaluates misuse risks, though the model has reportedly already fallen into unsanctioned hands. Customer complaints about Claude usage limits in recent weeks are the practical compute shortage these new commitments are meant to address.

For investors, the read-through is that the leading frontier labs are now each locked into nine and ten-figure infrastructure obligations across multiple cloud and silicon partners. Google's role as both competitor and infrastructure supplier to Anthropic is unusual but reflects the reality that no single hyperscaler can underwrite the compute Anthropic needs alone. The TPU angle is the part most relevant to the chip supply chain: TPU capacity translates into orders for TSMC (2330 TT) advanced nodes and CoWoS packaging, plus HBM from SK Hynix (000660 KS) and Samsung (005930 KS).

Intel posts best day since 1987

Intel (INTC US) shares surged 23.6% Friday, the stock's largest single-session move since 1987, after first-quarter revenue and earnings beat consensus and management guided current quarter ahead of expectations on AI demand.

The rally took the stock past its 2000 dot-com peak to an all-time high. The US government's equity stake in Intel has now appreciated by roughly 300% to about $36 billion, per Yahoo Finance. CFO David Zinsner picked up the principal accounting officer role alongside his existing brief. HSBC's Frank Lee characterized the trajectory as "going from strength to strength."

Reading through to suppliers, Intel's bullish guidance reinforces the partnership thesis with TSMC (2330 TT) for advanced-node manufacturing and ASE Technology Holding (3711 TT) for back-end packaging. United Microelectronics (2303 TT) reports next Wednesday April 29 and will be watched as Intel's strategic foundry ally on selective nodes.

The market reaction beyond Intel itself was telling. NVIDIA (NVDA US) closed at a record, retaking the $5 trillion market cap mark, with the rally framed by some traders as Intel-driven validation of broader hyperscaler AI capex plans. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index broke through 10,000 intraday, dragging Taiwan's TWSE up 1,218 points (the fifth-largest single-day point gain in index history) to a record 38,932. TSMC ADRs rose more than 5%.

DeepSeek V4 ships with Huawei Ascend support

DeepSeek released the preview of V4 on Friday, with V4-Pro at 1.6 trillion total parameters (49 billion active) and a 1 million-token context window, validated on both NVIDIA (NVDA US) GPUs and Huawei Ascend NPUs.

Pricing is the headline number. V4-Pro charges $3.48 per million output tokens versus Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6 at $25 per million, an order-of-magnitude gap. DeepSeek positions V4-Pro as exceeding Claude Sonnet 4.5 on user feedback for agentic coding, approaching Claude Opus 4.6 in non-thinking mode but still trailing its thinking mode. V4-Flash is the cheaper variant at 284B total / 13B active parameters.

The Huawei angle is the strategic story for investors. DeepSeek confirmed one of V4's key efficiency techniques runs on Ascend NPUs, and Huawei's WeChat post said the entire Ascend lineup now supports V4. This is the clearest demonstration to date that China's domestic AI accelerator stack can host a frontier-tier open-weights model competitively, achieved despite US export controls limiting Chinese access to NVIDIA's top chips.

The architectural innovation is a new attention mechanism that compresses tokens, combined with DeepSeek Sparse Attention to reduce compute and memory requirements meaningfully versus traditional approaches. The release ends a long wait for a major DeepSeek refresh; competitors including Moonshot AI, MiniMax, Alibaba (BABA US) and ByteDance shipped updates during DeepSeek's quiet period. Bloomberg's framing was that V4 fails to narrow the US lead in AI; the counterview is that the cost gap and Huawei compatibility shift competitive dynamics in inference economics and Chinese sovereign AI deployment, even if benchmark leadership remains with US labs.

Samsung strike threat compounds memory tightness

Samsung Electronics (005930 KS) union members held a 40,000-strong rally Thursday and threatened an 18-day strike beginning May 21 if management does not accept demands including 15% of operating profit as bonus and removal of the bonus cap.

Output already cratered during the protest. Samsung foundry production dropped 58% and memory production 18% on Thursday's overnight shift as unionized workers attended the rally, per Reuters. A sustained strike would directly affect both DRAM/NAND output from the world's largest memory supplier and foundry output competing with TSMC (2330 TT).

This lands on top of an already tight memory market. The Verge frames the AI-datacenter-driven RAM shortage as already hitting consumer prices on phones, PS5s and Raspberry Pis, with the 4TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD now near $1,000 versus a prior ~$320. Omdia separately raised its 2026 semiconductor revenue forecast to +62.7%, with DRAM market value expected to nearly double and NAND to grow roughly 4x, almost entirely on average selling price rather than units. Memory makers shifting capacity toward higher-priced HBM is exacerbating the squeeze on conventional DRAM/NAND, with relief unlikely before 2027 per Omdia.

The investor implication: any strike duration north of a week would tighten an already tight market and benefit memory suppliers with operational continuity, notably SK Hynix (000660 KS) and Micron (MU US), while penalizing buyers running thin inventories. Korean media flagged that ETF flows are already favoring SK Hynix over Samsung on this risk read.

Hormuz blockade bleeds into photoresist supply

The near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz since early March is squeezing naphtha supply, the upstream input for the PGME and PGMEA solvents central to semiconductor photoresists, with Samsung (005930 KS) and SK Hynix (000660 KS) cited as the most exposed.

Japanese photoresist suppliers including JSR (4185 JT), Tokyo Ohka Kogyo (4186 JT), Shin-Etsu Chemical (4063 JT) and Fujifilm (4901 JT) have warned the Korean memory makers of potential raw-material disruption, according to TheElec via TechNews. EUV-process advanced nodes are likely to feel the pinch first given purity requirements. Morningstar's Phelix Lee estimates roughly six months of stable wafer output remains, supported by inventory buffers and partial US substitute supply.

Geographic exposure: Taiwan accounts for ~26.4% of global photoresist demand and Korea for ~25.4%, per Fuji Keizai. The total photoresist market is forecast at ~$2.7bn in 2026E, up ~9% from 2025. Isaiah Research's Joseph Chung argued the near-term TSMC (2330 TT) impact should be limited given diversified sourcing. Natixis' Gary Ng noted China has more vertical integration but still depends on Japan for high-end materials, with Japanese imports making up 56% of Chinese photoresist imports in 1H25.

The market read is that this is a slow-burn supply risk rather than an immediate shortage, but it compounds the Samsung labor risk above and the broader memory tightness Omdia flagged. Watch JSR and TOK pricing/allocation commentary, and any inventory disclosure from Samsung and SK Hynix in their next prints.

Hon Hai eyes 50% of Mitsubishi Electric Mobility

Hon Hai Precision (2317 TT) signed an MOU with Mitsubishi Electric (6503 JT) to evaluate a strategic alliance in automotive equipment, including a potential 50% transfer of Mitsubishi Electric Mobility Corporation to Hon Hai.

The framework matches Japanese press reports from March that Hon Hai was seeking a five-tenths stake in Mitsubishi Electric's automotive components arm. Mitsubishi Electric runs more than 200 affiliates globally with around 150,000 employees across utilities, energy, defense and space, factory automation, automotive equipment, building systems, HVAC, semiconductors and other businesses. The MOU is non-binding and conditional on commercial terms, regulatory approval and final contract.

For Hon Hai's MIH electric-vehicle ambitions, gaining majority co-control of an established Tier-1 auto component supplier with a global blue-chip customer book is materially more strategic than prior Yulon and Stellantis alliances. The signing executives are Hon Hai EV strategy chief Jun Seki (関潤) and Mitsubishi Electric Mobility president 田中和德. If consummated, this bolts a credible auto-grade module business onto Hon Hai's contract manufacturing platform precisely as MediaTek (2454 TT) and others push silicon further into the cockpit.

TSMC fund-cap relief and Arizona packaging push

Taiwan's FSC raised the single-stock cap on domestic equity funds and active Taiwan ETFs from 10% to 25% effective Friday for companies with greater than 10% TWSE weighting, a change that almost exclusively benefits TSMC (2330 TT) and helped drive the stock to a TWD 2,185 record close, up 5.0%.

The mechanical impact is meaningful. Yuanta Taiwan 50 (0050 TT) was already TSMC's fifth-largest shareholder after adding more than 180,000 lots in 2025. The new ceiling lets domestic fund managers continue allocating into TSMC alongside passive flow rather than forced trimming. Singapore's GIC reduced its TSMC position by more than 140,000 lots over the past year, per UDN.

TSMC also confirmed routine April salary increases of 3% to 5% for employees, in line with prior years, with 8,000 new hires planned for 2026 and revenue guidance of more than 30% YoY growth. Separately, TSMC's Senior VP of Global Business and Deputy Co-COO Y.L. Wang said the Arizona advanced packaging fab is targeted for 2029 commissioning. CoWoS roadmap updates at the North America Technology Symposium include 5.5x reticle capability already in production and a 14x reticle version planned for 2028.

The combination of regulatory tailwind, capital concentration mechanics and packaging capex announcements makes TSMC the highest-conviction long among Taiwan large caps for the week. Morgan Stanley separately rotated its top pick to MediaTek (2454 TT) on relative valuation, lifting MediaTek's target price by more than 30% to TWD 2,588.
